For Sam Carter

Sam was late. Not late late but he wasn't early which meant he was late. The line to get coffee had been long and then the line to use the bathroom before class from all the people that had already had all their coffee was long so Sam was just barely on time for his Quantum Mechanics class which meant he was late.

Some sort of Army scientist was going to come talk to their class today, Major or Captain or something Sam Carter. He'd meant to do some research on them but had gotten distracted with other things. So now he was stuck with a front row seat in the lecture hall. You'd think by his third year of university he'd have learned by now to get there in time to get a good seat in the middle but nope, he was front and center in the front row now.

At least he had a list of questions prepared to ask though. His professor was a little sick of some of his questions so hopefully this military guy would be able to at least tolerate the questions, if not answer them. It was just a little difficult when you knew classified information about other planets and aliens and stuff to get people to understand you weren't always talking about what was theoretically possible but what you knew some other species did.

October 26th

Sam was kind of miserable. He knew that he should probably be over it by now, or at least he should feel less miserable or something, but he wasn't. So many people had been leaving the island lately that everyone had lost someone close. Those people all leaving made him think of all the other people that had left over the years and even the people back home that he missed and just... yeah. It was not a pleasant thought process.

So he did something to take his mind off of it, something that would take enough of his focus that he could stop thinking about all of his friends that he couldn't see anymore; Rock Band. Of course, since so many people had left it was basically Guitar Hero, but whatever. He had it set up in the Rec Room and the difficulty set up fairly high. With any luck he'd be able to zone out to his problems and just focus on the game.

For Cassie

Sam collapsed next to Cassie, panting heavily as his body came down from the most amazing high. Having sex with Cassie never, ever got old. He was pretty sure it wasn't supposed to get old but with most things you did over and over that eventually happened. Not with this though. Or rather, not with Cassie. Sam was still crazy about her and more in love with her every day. It was kind of annoying, he knew. They were that cutesy couple that couldn't get enough of each other when they first started dating. Only they had been dating for a while.

That's not to say they didn't have their arguments, because they did. Like just an hour or so ago they had been having an argument about cleaning. Mostly about how Cassie hated it. Sam hated it too, but he still did it. Sometimes it had seemed like Sam did all the cleaning and when she talked about how much she hated doing it, he snapped a little bit. He hated it too, he just still did it. Cassie could physically push herself harder than anyone he knew, but it was a huge struggle for her to clean.

So they had fought. And then they had make up sex, which was the most awesome release for all that pent up frustration and energy.

"I would almost get into a fight with you, just to go through that," he said, trying to catch his breath. Sex with Cassie, especially make up sex, could be incredibly physical.

Sam had gotten used to the island. Actually, he really liked the island. He liked the people there, how interesting it was, and he especially liked Cassie. Okay, he especially loved Cassie. One of the things he loved about her was snuggling up next to her in bed. It was one of the guaranteed ways to delay her early mornings just a bit.

Growling happily, Sam scooted closer to her under the covers and slid an arm along her bare shoulder and across her... oddly flat chest. While Cassie wasn't exactly in the same category as Wonder Woman in the breast department, neither was she a slouch.

"What the hell," Sam said with a yawn, trying to force his brain to work properly so he could figure out what the heck was going on. Spooning? Check. Bed? Check. Room at home? Check.

Only, one of those things wasn't like the others. One of them didn't belong.

"Holy shit!" Sam said, sitting bolt upright in his bed, surrounded by all his stuff back home. "I'm home! I'm home!"

A moment later, the revelation of what that meant hit him.

"No. No no no. I can't be home, I can't- I can't be home. I- I have Cassie, I have Cassie back on the island and I can't leave her. And Coraline is going to kill me and- I have to get back. I have to get back to the island. Wait, no, I have to warn the Autobots first, then I have to get back to the island!"

Sam had noticed that Dr. Zimmerman was feelings less than psyched about how she looked while pregnant. Personally, he still thought she still looked amazing, but he could see how she would maybe feel a bit down about it all the same.

His shift at the vet clinic was just about over and she was coming in after him, so he was hastily writing her a card to help cheer her up.

Dear Dr. Mrs. Zimmerman. I'm sorry I didn't quite get everything done today, but it's really hard to work here without thinking of you, and thoughts of you are really distracting. So really, it's not my fault but yours for being hot. So in the future if you would like me to get all my work done please be less hot.

Sincerely,
Sam.

P.S. Just kidding. Don't ever be less hot.

Sam looked at the note and gave a nod, pleased with it. Hopefully she would find it after he left and it would make sure smile. Turning around, he came face to face with Dr. Mrs. Zimmerman.

"Uh. Hello. I was just... writing. Nothing. Writing nothing. Certainly not a note. That is in my hand right now."

Dated June 11th

It had been hours since he had seen the movie and the initial rage and shock had worn off. Some of the things his friends had done for him had helped, but nothing could truly make what he had seen better. Now he just felt numb.

He needed Cassie. He was glad that she wasn't there to see the movie with him, because he wouldn't want her to see him going through all that. Not what was happening on the screen or what he had done in response to it. But he needed her now.

When he neared the hut, he was relieved to hear her inside of it. It was weird how quickly he had become accustomed to the sounds of her living there. They were comforting. Sure there was the regular problems about who slept where on the bed and whether it was big enough, but overall living together had been pretty good.

Opening the door without saying a word, Sam just walked up to her and hugged her, holding her tight and taking solace in the knowledge that for right now, Cassie was something that was safe, something that was sure.

Sam had gotten used to the hike to Cassie's place, but that didn't mean he still didn't grumble a bit when he had to make it. Yeah, it was a small concession to make to visit the most amazing girl in the world (or several worlds, depending on your experience with inter-dimensional travel) but that didn't make it fun. It also made it especially difficult if you wanted to bring your girlfriend a treat of ice cream or something.

During the Old West though, he didn't have to worry about that particular problem. It was stupid hot though, so even just jogging there was brutal. Besides that, there weren't really any athletic clothes for the time period, which meant he had to walk the entire distance in tight jeans, flannel, and boots.

Fortunately, Cassie was worth it.

"Cassie!" he called out as he approached the little homestead that was a short ways from the main section of the town. Reaching into his bag, he tossed a sandwich he had brought to Iris, hoping it would at least temporary appease the dog.

"Your incredible loyal and loving boyfriend has hiked all this way to see you. Please be appropriately flattered."

Dated January 1st

Sam was nervous. Not just a little nervous either, but like a lot nervous. The kind of nervous where he just didn't stop talking and he rambled on and on. He hoped that Cassie didn't think he was worried or scared. It was more of an excited nervous.

It had helped that they had done a lot of stuff up until now. Being naked with each other on a semi-regular basis and engaging is sexual acts that weren't quite sex had helped a lot. That didn't mean this still wasn't kind of a huge step, even if for no other reason than they'd been avoiding it for a while, giving it significance.

When they stepped into his apartment, he took his coat off of Cassie's shoulders where he had put it when they started to walk home so that she didn't get too cold.

"Have I told you in the last five minutes you were the most gorgeous person there tonight?"

Sam felt somewhat guilty about standing outside Dr. Magnus's office once again, looking for advice. He knew that she said she was always happy to help him if she had time, but sometimes Sam just felt like some annoying kid taking her attention away from more important things. She had never made him feel like that, quite the opposite, but Dr. Magnus was... Dr. Magnus and he couldn't help but feel a little intimidated.

Still, she had never served him wrong so far and he really respected her so when something really mattered, he came to her for advice about it. He was already feeling better about the situation with Cassie and his growing feelings for her. For all Aphrodite's... Aphroditeness he had come away from their talk feeling a bit better.

But when Sam needed advice on something big, it always came back to Dr. Magnus. Knocking on her office door, he cleared his throat.

"Dr. Magnus, it's Sam. If you've got a moment I'd like to talk to you about something."

Sam wasn't really sure what you brought a Goddess of Love when you were coming to ask their advice on something. He knew that Aphrodite like fruit baskets, which he had prepared, but beyond that he wasn't quite sure.what to bring. At least, he wasn't sure what to bring that he could afford. Jewelry or something was a little out of his capabilities.

So, hopefully she would be pleased with the fact that he had brought a fruit basket and had thought to come ask the Goddess of Love advice on... love. Potential love, at least. Eventual love, probably.

Sighing, he knocked on the door with his free hand, holding up the fruit basket with other hand.

"Aphrodite, oh most wonderful and best Goddess of Love out of all the pantheons of god, I beseech your help in the matters of the heart," he said, figuring that he should probably flower and formalize things up a bit for her.

Sam was rather pleased with how well his classes were going so far. The coursework was giving him something to do and while it was challenging, he definitely had enough time to work on it all. Also, he found that it was making him appreciate his free time more, which he had needed.

Right now, he was debating on whether or not he wanted to go enjoy that free time or keep studying. He was working on a particularly tedious (at least at the moment) assignment and could use a break. But if he just got it done, then it would be over with.

"This is the most ridiculous conundrum ever," he said, flopping back against the bed. "Island, if you're listening to me, send me a sign. Work or not work? Help me out here."

The raft was ready. Or at least as ready as they were going to get it. Some logs fashioned together, a rudimentary mast along with a sail and a rudder all made up the raft. Sam was rather proud of it, considering he knew jack about sailing and had determined all of the necessary components out of books he had picked up around the island. The paddles weren't exactly state of the art either, mostly palm fronds wrapped tightly together, but they'd do well enough to paddle the boat if that was necessary.

He'd made sure to bring a backpack for him and Coraline each, filled with food, water, and protective clothing. He didn't expect them to get washed out to sea, but you never knew. Plus, a picnic on the raft would be pretty cool. So now all Sam had to do was wait for Coraline to join him to launch the raft on its maiden voyage and then hope Godzilla or who knows what didn't pop out of the ocean to eat them.

Sam wasn't sure what pistols at dawn was going to entail, but he was pretty sure it would not entail a duel. Ninety percent sure at least. Eighty percent sure if he was really, really low balling it. He was 100% sure though that it was going to require pistols and being up at dawn.

The pistols were found, albeit with some effort, down in Rapture. He spent even more time looking for a decent amount of ammunition for her as well. He had even run across a bottle of booze down there that he thought she might like. It was sort of a peace offering. He'd already apologize profusely, but he figured a hard earned bottle of alcohol would go a long way.

The up at dawn part wasn't all that difficult either. Somehow the novelty of sleeping late wore off pretty quick when it wasn't a luxury anymore. Sometimes he even got up that early to go running. This morning, there was a ten percent chance he was going to get shot at. At the worst, twenty percent chance.

So maybe he was slightly nervous while he waited for Kate, but he was also looking forward to it. It wasn't that he was eager to learn to shoot, but if someone was going to teach him, he wasn't going to turn away the offer.

This was going to be awkward, there was no doubt about it. There were not enough turtles in all the oceans to demonstrate the level of awkward this was going to be. Sam tried to keep telling himself that it was going to be better in the end, that they'd really communicate and get some things out and be closer for it. Somehow that didn't make it less awkward though.

He'd picked a time to come visit when he knew that Cissie would be out for a while. This was definitely not something they wanted someone else around for. It also didn't help that Cassie was still not in the best of moods after not getting any superpowers over the weekend. But Sam wasn't going to put this off any longer. It was time.

"Cassie!" he called out as he approached the hut. "Beautiful, you here?"

Wednesday evening found Sam in the Southern Clinic, which wasn't an unusual occurrence. He knew that it was Dr. Magnus' regular shift and one of the easiest ways to hunt her down. He knew that she wouldn't mind if he dropped by her hut or found her in the council offices, but he liked catching her at work on the off chance she'd have enough from time to let him see or do something especially cool.

Today, he actually arrived with some questions and some oranges. The questions weren't actually medically related, although the oranges were.

"Dr. Magnus?" he called out as he headed into the clinic.

Sam had been to the edge of dinosaur territory a few times. Cassie lived so far north that it would have been foolish not to just go the rest of the way a few times to see them. He had even gone into the territory a few times, but never very far. He'd seen the Jurassic Park movies enough times to know that hiking too far in was a good way to become raptor chow.

He had a feeling though that today that might change. Kate had "I make bad and dangerous decisions" written all over her. Maybe literally, since he wouldn't be surprised if she had a tattoo to that effect.

Still, she had seemed like she wasn't really enjoying the island all that much and he had told her he'd take her to see the dinosaurs. Coming from Dr. Magnus's world, that might not be all that exciting, but it was more exciting than most activities, so Sam had assembled two packs of provisions, just some trail food, water, rope, matches, and a few first aid items just in case.

All that was needed was Kate, which he wasn't sure would show or not. It was only about 10 o'clock or so, but who knew what kind of hideous hangover she might be nursing. If she did know, who knew what kind of mood or shape she'd be in.

Sam had everything ready that he needed for the excursion into the jungle with Coraline to find fruit. While he didn't necessarily need Coraline along, Sam knew how badly she had wanted to get out while grounded. Plus, she was pretty cool to have around, fun to kid around with and just be overly imaginative with.

"Alright, we've got backpacks, knife, water, snacks, rope, more rope..." he said, glancing around at all the supplies he had gathered. He was pretty sure that he had everything that he needed and then some. Hopefully they were only going to be gone a few hours, but with the Island you never knew what was going to happen.

"Now we just need Coraline."

Now that Sam knew that people on the island weren’t crazy, or at least they weren’t crazy cultists who only thought they were from other dimensions and used to have super powers, he figured he owed a few apologies. Well, maybe not apologies, but he could at least go seek out some of the people he met early on that he had kind of avoided because he thought they were insane.

He had seen Zell a couple of times and found out that he liked hanging out with the other young man and could forget surprisingly easily that the guy was a video game character in his world. Sam also felt like he should go find Cassie, since he was maybe not as entirely believing about her being able to fly as he could have been. Hopefully he could right out avoid saying that she was probably right, but he doubted it. She struck him as someone who probably wouldn’t let him off the hook so easily.

Finding where she would be was easy enough, even if it did get him a few raised eyebrows. Apparently a guy couldn’t ask the whereabouts of a hot girl without people suspecting he was up to something.

The fact that most people indicated she could be found near her hut training loaned credence to the fact that she was taught, if not by Amazons then at least someone, how to fight. Sam was beginning to wonder if he was the only person on the island that wasn’t some sort of martial arts expert.

Coming up to her hut, Sam stopped just as he got in sight of her. He’d seen enough, or maybe too many, movies to know that interrupting someone while they were training could get you hurt. Also, he was a little worried that Iris might attack him for whatever reason.

If wasn’t exactly glad he was on the island, he couldn’t deny that he wasn’t enjoying it. That made him feel a bit guilty though, that he was relaxing and enjoying himself when his family was an entire reality away. There was no helping it, he knew that, if he could go home he would. Part of him felt like he shouldn’t be enjoying himself this much without Mikaela, and as much as he missed her and there was a real, genuine ache at the absence of her presence, he couldn’t get past the fact that he was in what amounted to a tropical paradise.

Sure, there were dinosaurs on part of the island, some people were fictional characters, he slept in a sort of common room, and sometimes the island turned into candy, but overall it wasn’t that bad. There was even free food in the kitchen, which is where Sam found himself now, having a slightly late breakfast.

Next to his plate piled high with fruit and other assorted breakfast items, Sam had set a list. The list was of things that he should or needed to do here. He could just go through the rest of his time on the island doing nothing but hanging out. Room and board were free, clothes could be found in the clothes box (even if not reliably), and there really was no external need to do anything than just exist. Which was fine, for a bit. Sam definitely needed some decompression time. After everything back home with the Autobots and then finding himself here, doing and worrying about nothing for a while was healthy. But it wasn’t a routine that Sam wanted to keep forever. He had realized lately he wanted to do something with his life, he wanted it to mean something. Sam wasn’t sure just what he wanted it to mean, but he know he didn’t want it to mean nothing at all.

“Alright,” he mumbled to himself as he bit into an apple. “There’s school. Definitely doing school. Should I get a job? Do they have jobs? Maybe Zell could teach me to fight? Because that is seriously on a list of skills it would have been nice to have back home. Not that I could kung fu a Decepticon. Maybe I should add ‘learn to use a rocket launcher’ to my list. Is that even a possibility here? Do they even have guns on the island?”
